Artificial Intelligence Regulation Bill

Breakdown of the much needed regulation that has finally been set in motion.

Scrutiny

Mandatory legislative and regulation towards safety should be imposed.

A high safety standard should be imposed.

High moral and ethical principles should be embedded within the framework.

The outlook for a better world we live in rather than commercial gain should be what underpins every detail of coding.

Pro's

Leading AI companies developing highly capable AI systems committed to voluntary safety and transparency measures ahead of the first global AI Safety Summit, hosted by the UK Government last November. They also pledged to collaborate with the new UK AI Safety Institute to test their AI systems pre- and post-deployment.

Securing this commitment was an important achievement and a significant positive step. However, as these systems’ capabilities continue to grow, the Government anticipates that a distinct legislative and regulatory approach will be necessary to tackle the risks posed by highly capable GPAI.

The Bill

To ensure a coherent and streamlined AI regulatory landscape, DSIT has started establishing a central function. The central function supports UK regulators’ understanding of the AI risk landscape and will support them to conduct risk assessments by providing expert risk analysis, which is already underway within DSIT. This allows us to monitor risks holistically and identify any potential gaps in our approach that leave risk not adequately mitigated

Timeline

The Artificial Intelligence Regulation Bill was introduced in the House of Lords on November 22nd 2023.

On the 22nd of March 2024 the House of Lord passed it's second reading with the committee stage expected to follow.

At the same time the EU AI Act is going through technical perfection by European Countries and European Parliament, during the first half of this year.
